Happy Birthday Wireless!
CEA Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Launch of the First Cellular Network
What do you remember about 1983? Some may think of the Washington Redskins first Super Bowl victory, defeating the Miami Dolphins in
Super Bowl XVII. Others may look back on 1983 as the year the world was introduced to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. 1983 was also the year
Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. A very few may even recall it was the year
Lotus 1-2-3 was released for IBM computers.
But for the wireless industry, 1983 marked the introduction of the
first cellular phone and the launch of the
first commercial cellular network, two landmark achievements that helped pave the way for how we currently live, work and play. The impact of those two events has grown into a phenomenon, one that never could have been predicted. By 1992, just nine short years later, the number of cellular users surpassed ten million. Now, 25 years later, it is impossible for most of us to imagine life without a cell phone.
