Digital Curators

Do any of these sound like you?
  • I am an early adopter of technology
  • I am more experienced than the average photographer
  • I like to create visual displays of my photos
  • I enjoy organizing my digital photos
  • I like to take digital photos because they allow me to keep memories forever
If you answered yet to many or all of these, you may be a Digital Curator. Digital Curators are archivists or photo librarians at heart. They enjoy all aspects of digital photography, but find organization the most rewarding aspect.

Many camera buffs in this group consider digital photography a hobby. They think of themselves as more experienced than the average consumer when it comes to digital photography and tend to be early adopters of all technology.

Digital Curators take a significantly higher number of pictures than most digital photographer groups. Their favorite subjects: children, family, friends, nature and pets. Digital Curators often like to print and physically display their photos, making these photographers the antithesis of the One Click Wonders group who snap pictures like crazy, but do nothing with them. Digital Curators place a great emphasis on the sharing and saving aspects of digital photography. They enjoy printing, organizing, displaying and sharing their digital photos. This includes creating and printing custom scrapbooks, albums and photo books. Despite all the tools available though, many Digital Curators report frustration managing a growing collection of photographs.

Like Digital Mavericks, photographers in the Digital Curators group use more than one digital imaging device to take pictures. Look inside a Digital Curator's camera bag and you are likely to find a newer, high-megapixel point-and-shoot camera and lots of accessories. In addition to their primary camera, many also use other devices, like smartphones or even film-based cameras, to snap pictures. Users in this group have or are considering upgrading to a digital SLR which is not surprising since they are more likely to use the cameras' manual controls.

What advanced features do Digital Curators look for in a camera? Like the Digital Mavericks, they are most interested in digital features like face recognition, touch screen controls, wireless connectivity, geotagging, voice commands and voice recognition.

Since saving, sharing and storing pictures is paramount, Digital Curators own a plethora of digital imaging accessories. Memory cards, cases, cleaning tools, batteries and charging accessories are most common. They take their role as "keeper of the pictures" very seriously and rely on digital imaging accessories to get the job done. Ironically, they are the least likely of all groups to own a printer.

If you can identify with the Digital Curators, consider:

  • Upgrading your photo management software to one that allows you to organize your photos based on the people in them, locatons ("geotages") and/or album. Solutions like Picasa, Lightroom 2 and iPhoto offer these advanced organizational tools
  • Investing in networked attached storage (NAS) drves that can automatically back up photos and share photos among all devices on your home network
  • Updgrading to a Digital SLR or a point-and-shoot with the advanced features mentioned above
  • Purchasing accessories to make sharing your digital photos easier, like a photo printer of digital frame
